Olive Young Haul: The Basket You'll Actually Finish

A useful Olive Young haul is about eight items, not forty. One SPF50+ sunscreen, one cleanser, one cream and one treatment step run roughly ₩60,000–₩100,000 and cover almost everything a routine does. Below is the full basket with Korean shelf prices, what each thing is for, what to leave behind, and what all of it weighs by the time you are dragging it around at 3pm.

The short answer: three things first, then stop

An Olive Young haul only needs three things to work: one SPF50+ sunscreen, one cleanser that suits your skin, and one moisturiser. That basket costs about ₩45,000–₩70,000 and does most of the job. Essences, toner pads, sheet masks and spot patches sit on top of it as upgrades, not requirements.

A realistic starter basket with one treatment step added lands around ₩60,000–₩100,000 at Korean retail prices. Prices move during sale weeks and the 1+1 tags move them a lot, so treat every figure here as a ceiling rather than a quote.

Most haul videos are a shelf, not a routine

The genre has a problem. Forty products laid out on a hotel bed makes a good thumbnail and a bad routine. Half of those bottles are still three-quarters full a year later, and the ones that get finished are always the same four: sunscreen, cleanser, cream, and whichever serum happens to sit closest to the sink.

There is a quiet arithmetic problem too. A 50ml sunscreen is roughly 30 to 40 full-face applications if you use the amount the SPF rating assumes, so one tube is a couple of months of daily use. Clearing two 1+1 deals gets you four tubes, and the last one gets opened long after that makes sense.

So this list is organised by whether you will finish the thing. Buy first, buy if there is room, skip. If you want the wider product tour instead, what to buy at Olive Young is the catalogue version. This one is the basket and the budget.

Buy first: sunscreen, one cleanser, one cream

Sunscreen. This is the one step where the Korean shelf is genuinely better value than most places. Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun, SPF50+ PA++++, 50ml, ₩12,000–₩18,000, is the product that made the brand travel: chemical filters, essentially no white cast, matte finish. The catch is that chemical filters sting some people's eyes, and the matte finish is unkind to dry skin, which wants a moisturiser underneath. Reapply every two to three hours outdoors. The sunscreen page and the no-white-cast comparison cover the alternatives.

Cleanser. If you wear sunscreen daily you need something that removes it properly. Bioderma Sensibio H2O, 500ml, ₩26,000–₩34,000, ranked first in olyoung.shop's tally of 482 real user recommendations across 323 products, checked on 17 August 2026, with four Olive Young staff flagging it. It is French rather than Korean, and the reason people buy it in Seoul is that it costs less here than at home. It is also half a kilo of liquid, so it is a checked-bag purchase. An Anua cleansing oil does the same job in a smaller bottle.

Cream. Two sensible options depending on skin. AESTURA Atobarrier 365 Cream, 80ml, ₩28,000–₩39,000, is the most-mentioned product in that tally with 14 recommendations, and it is a plain ceramide cream rather than a trend. It is thick, and in humid weather the lotion from the same line is the better buy. For normal to combination skin, Round Lab 1025 Birch Juice Moisturizing Cream, 80ml, ₩20,000–₩26,000, is fragrance-free and frequently 1+1.

The basket, priced

Sizes, Korean shelf prices from August 2026, and the reason to leave each one out. Sale weeks and 1+1 tags shift these, sometimes by half.

La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Baume B5, 40mlOvernight balm after retinoids or too much sun₩18,000–₩26,000You wanted a daytime moisturiser. It is tacky and occlusive
LANEIGE Lip Sleeping Mask, 20gThe gift item, six recommendations in the tally₩20,000–₩24,000You already like your lip balm. It is a jar and costs more

Bio Heal BOH Probioderm 3D Lifting Cream, 50mlPeptide firming cream, top-10 in the tally₩30,000–₩42,000You are on a budget. "Lifting" means firmer-looking over weeks, not structural

Three budgets, if you would rather plan from the total down:

BasketWhat is in itRough cost
MinimumSunscreen, one cleanser, one creamabout ₩45,000–₩70,000
StarterThe above plus one serum or essence, plus a toner or pad stepabout ₩60,000–₩100,000
Haul with giftsThe starter plus a lip mask, a 10-pack of sheet masks and one extra creamabout ₩110,000–₩185,000

On the tags: 1+1 means two for the price of one, 2+1 means three for the price of two. They only save money on something you were going to buy twice. A second sunscreen, yes. A second 250ml toner is 600g of luggage for a bottle you will still be working through in four months.

Buy if you have room

Second tier, in the order I would add them.

  • Sheet masks, in multipacks. ₩1,000–₩2,000 each in a ten-pack, and often ₩3,000 or more each if you pick them up loose at the front of the store. Flat, light, and the best gift-per-gram in the shop. Buy the box.
  • Hydrocolloid spot patches. Cheap, flat, and the one item here that Korea genuinely popularised. Worth two or three packs even if your skin is clear this week. More on the breakouts and pores page.
  • Toner pads. SKINFOOD Carrot Carotene Calming Water Pads, 60 pads, ₩18,000–₩25,000, with three separate staff picks in the tally. The tub is heavy and every pad is single-use, so it is a checked-bag and slightly guilty purchase.
  • One hydrating serum or essence. Torriden Dive-In, 50ml, ₩15,000–₩22,000, for oil-free hydration, or COSRX Advanced Snail 96, 100ml, ₩16,000–₩24,000, if stringy textures do not bother you. Both are hydration rather than repair, and neither fades a scar.
  • Niacinamide. The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1%, 30ml, ₩10,000–₩16,000, is the cheap way to test whether evening out tone is worth pursuing for you. 10% stings a lot of people and 2–5% is the safer entry point. Neither does anything visible without daily sunscreen, because sun exposure re-darkens spots faster than a serum fades them.
  • The lip mask, for other people. LANEIGE Lip Sleeping Mask, 20g, ₩20,000–₩24,000, six recommendations in the tally and the item foreign visitors most often buy as a gift. It is a jar you apply with a finger, and it costs more than a lip balm doing much the same job, which matters less when it is a present.
  • A cream for reactive skin. La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Baume B5, 40ml, ₩18,000–₩26,000, eight recommendations, and the standard answer after a retinoid night. Small tube, big return. The sensitive skin page has the rest of that shelf.

Every clinic we list is government-registered to treat foreign patients — and we take zero commission.

What to skip

  • Ten-step starter kits. A box of eight miniatures is a sampler, not a routine, and you will finish none of them.
  • A second cream, a third serum. One cream, one hydrating step. Duplicates are the main reason hauls go unused.
  • Large toner bottles, if you are travelling light. A 250ml toner is around 300g once you count the bottle. Good product, poor luggage.
  • Jars where a tube of the same thing exists. Heavier, and you put a finger in it every night.
  • Anything promising to erase scars or restructure skin. Skincare works on texture, hydration and tone. The rest is a clinic conversation, and no essence is dosed for it.
  • Cushion foundation bought unswatched. Shade ranges have widened, and the deep end is still thin. Swatch along the jaw in daylight near the door rather than under store lighting.
  • Cotton pads, headbands and travel bottles. Daiso sells the same tools for a fraction of the price. The Olive Young vs Daiso comparison covers what belongs in which basket.
  • The airport on the way out. Thinner range and no time to think about any of it.

If you are shopping by problem rather than by product, the skincare hub sorts all of this by concern, and the firmness and fine lines page is the one to read before you spend ₩40,000 on a peptide cream.

Weight, liquids and the 11am check-out

Anything over 100ml goes in checked baggage. That rules out the 500ml Bioderma, the 250ml toner and the 250ml pad tub for carry-on travellers, which is most of the liquid half of this list. Flying hand luggage only, build the haul from the 50ml sunscreen, the 80ml creams, sheet masks and patches, and order the big bottles at home.

Rough weights to plan around: a 50ml sunscreen is negligible, an 80ml cream is 150 to 200g with the jar, a 250ml toner is about 300g, and the 500ml micellar water is over half a kilo. A ten-pack of sheet masks is light and flattens into any gap in the case, which is why it stays the sensible souvenir. Two people splitting one basket is also cheaper than two of everything.

Then the last-day problem. Hotel check-out is usually 11am and most long-haul flights out of Incheon leave in the evening, so the haul spends six or eight hours attached to you. Station coin lockers exist, and the large ones near Myeongdong and Hongdae fill by mid-morning. Our sister site seoul-luggage.today79.com maps storage by subway station with live locker availability, which is the difference between planning that afternoon and walking it with two bags.

If you are still deciding which branch to hit, the Olive Young store directory lists them by area. Flagship stores carry the full range; small neighbourhood branches often do not, and the thing you came for will be the thing they are out of.

Tax refund: bring the passport, and know what changed in 2026

Retail cosmetics still qualify for the tourist tax refund. Take your physical passport into the store, not a photo of it on your phone. The larger Olive Young branches apply an instant discount at the register on qualifying purchases so you skip the airport queue, and smaller stores issue a slip you claim at a refund kiosk instead.

The thing people mix up: the VAT refund for cosmetic medical procedures ended on 1 January 2026. That was a separate scheme covering clinic treatments, and it has nothing to do with the tube of sunscreen in your basket. Skincare bought at retail is unaffected. The full refund walkthrough covers the thresholds, the kiosk and what to do when a store gets it wrong.

One more piece of arithmetic. The shelf price already includes VAT, so the refund is money back later rather than a discount you can stack on the 1+1 tag. Budget from the shelf price, treat the refund as a rebate, and you will not be disappointed at the kiosk.

Frequently asked questions

What should I buy in an Olive Young haul?+

Start with one SPF50+ sunscreen, one cleanser and one moisturiser, which is about ₩45,000–₩70,000 and covers most of what a routine does. Add one hydrating serum or essence plus a toner or pad step to reach a proper starter basket at ₩60,000–₩100,000. Sheet masks in multipacks and hydrocolloid spot patches are the cheapest things worth adding after that.

How much should I budget for an Olive Young haul?+

₩60,000–₩100,000 for a starter basket of four or five products, and ₩110,000–₩185,000 if you are adding gifts like lip masks and sheet mask packs. Most frequently restocked products sit between ₩12,000 and ₩30,000 each. Prices move during sale weeks, and 1+1 and 2+1 tags change the maths a lot.

Can tourists still get a tax refund at Olive Young in 2026?+

Yes. Retail cosmetics still qualify for the tourist tax refund, and you need your physical passport with you in the store. Larger Olive Young branches apply an instant discount at the register on qualifying purchases. The separate VAT refund for cosmetic medical procedures ended on 1 January 2026 and does not affect skincare bought at retail.

Can I take a Korean skincare haul in hand luggage?+

Only the containers under 100ml. A 50ml sunscreen and 80ml creams are fine; the 500ml micellar water, 250ml toners and pad tubs are not, and they will be taken at security. Sheet masks and hydrocolloid patches are usually treated as solids, though heavily saturated gel masks are sometimes questioned, so check your airline's rules if you are carrying a lot.

Is it cheaper to buy Korean skincare in Korea or order it online?+

Korean shelf prices are the baseline, and the bands in this guide are what you would pay at Olive Young in Seoul in August 2026. Overseas listings usually sit higher once shipping and handling land, though a good sale abroad can beat a full-price Korean shelf. The clearer saving in Korea is on 1+1 promotions and on imported pharmacy items like Bioderma, which many visitors find cheaper here than at home.

What should I skip in an Olive Young haul?+

Ten-step starter kits, duplicate categories like a second cream or third serum, and cushion foundation you have not swatched in daylight. Skip large toner bottles if you are travelling hand luggage only, since a 250ml bottle is around 300g. Cotton pads, headbands and travel bottles are cheaper at Daiso than at Olive Young.
