"Korean perm" is not one thing, and walking in asking for one will get you a follow-up question you may not be ready for. The names worth knowing:
- Setting perm (셋팅펌). Heated rods shape a defined, springy curl — the classic S-curl or beach wave. Holds its shape well and reads as "styled."
- Digital / hot perm (디지털펌, 열펌). The Seoul signature. Loose, natural waves that look almost straight when wet and only show once the hair dries. Gentler-looking than a Western cold perm, and the reason most visitors come.
- Volume magic / root perm (볼륨매직, 뿌리펌). Not about curl at all — it lifts flat roots or smooths frizz. For people who want their hair to sit better, not change texture.
- Down perm (다운펌). A men's staple that flattens hair sticking out at the sides. Quick and cheap.
The practical takeaway: bring a photo. Korean stylists work to a reference far more precisely than to a description, and "soft waves" means five different things.
