Korean Perm in Seoul: Types, Cost, and How Long It Lasts

"Korean perm" is not one thing, and walking in asking for one will get you a follow-up question you may not be ready for. The names worth knowing:

• Setting perm (셋팅펌). Heated rods shape a defined, springy curl — the classic S-curl or beach wave. Holds its shape well and reads as "styled."
• Digital / hot perm (디지털펌, 열펌). The Seoul signature. Loose, natural waves that look almost straight when wet and only show once the hair dries. Gentler-looking than a Western cold perm, and the reason most visitors come.
• Volume magic / root perm (볼륨매직, 뿌리펌). Not about curl at all — it lifts flat roots or smooths frizz. For people who want their hair to sit better, not change texture.
• Down perm (다운펌). A men's staple that flattens hair sticking out at the sides. Quick and cheap.

The practical takeaway: bring a photo. Korean stylists work to a reference far more precisely than to a description, and "soft waves" means five different things.

Perm pricing moves with your hair length and the salon's tier, and the number on the menu board is usually the short-hair price. Rough ranges across Seoul:

• Digital or setting perm: ₩100,000–250,000. Hongdae sits at the lower end, Gangnam and Cheongdam at the upper, with senior-designer surcharges on top.
• Volume magic / root perm: ₩50,000–120,000.
• Men's perm: ₩30,000–80,000; a down perm alone can be ₩20,000–40,000.

Two costs catch visitors out: a long-hair surcharge that often isn't posted, and treatment that may be quoted separately from the perm itself. Ask for the total at your length before they start, not after.

A digital perm holds its wave for roughly three to six months; a cold or setting perm is usually on the shorter side of that. It doesn't drop out evenly — it relaxes as your hair grows, so the wave sits lower over time rather than vanishing.
